Can I give my dog chewing gum?

Big NO!

Chewing gum might be good for people, but it is bad for dogs!

The main problem is xylitol, a sugar-alcohol sweetener found in sugar-free human food products such as chewing gum, candy, baked goods and in other products.

Xylitol is often toxic to dogs, can cause an increase in the insulin circulating through your dog’s body. That can cause your dog’s blood sugar to drop and can also cause liver failure. Initial symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of coordination. Eventually, the dog may have seizures. Liver failure can occur within just a few days.

In humans, xylitol has little to no effect.
